//
Shia Surprise

//Quick secondary context: This was written before any of the recent reveals about Mr. LaBeouf occurred, and while I obviously wrote this more based on a funny YouTube video than the actual actor (I think?), I do want to clearly distance my using him in this campaign from his atrocious behavior in the real world.
//Context: It’s the Rob Cantor comedy song turned into a D&D session! One of the towns destroyed by Exniar was being stalked by a mysterious entity. This wound up, surprisingly, being one of the most referenced sessions I ever wrote for this group. They were terrified as they wandered into his domain, and even more alarmed when he continued to get up when they thought he’d been defeated.
I also had add-in mobs that were townsfolk’s’ corpses, used by the boss as revenant servants, wearing giant cursed paper masks in his image.
As recently as January of 2019, the players are still afraid of Shia ever returning. When a Shadow of Vecna stalked a caravan of NPCs outside their town, they were more terrified that it could be the Actual Cannibal than the (actually much more dangerous) False Shaper.

Session 83 – May 14th, 2017

This Week

The party has returned from The Maw, victorious over Exniar and Idava, and are restocking the Classis for a jaunt over to Avaj’Riss, where rumor has it there are undead creatures roaming about…

Anomalies Around Avaj’Riss

When the party first arrives, they find the entire town in ruins. A large crater sits where there was the warehouse at the docks and surrounding area; building are naught but cinder and ash. The town is littered with bodies; some obviously incinerated at once by Exniar, others who appear to have died from their injuries, either from their burns or from the damage to the town. Several corpses appear to be partially consumed, and some bodies appear to have been butchered: cuts of prime meat removed and the rest left out for scavengers.

Low level Investigation (10) indicates that the teeth marks are humanoid; a higher (20) Investigation or Insight or a decent (15) nature check reveals that it wasn’t undead that ate them, as there’s no tell tale bits of rotten flesh or shattered teeth left in the bite marks. As this investigation takes place, the party will encounter a local farmer, William Moushe, looting the corpses…

William is from a far to the west, and has heard the rumors of undead roaming the area, but has been blessed enough to not see any himself; he’s been coming back and forth from the town since he saw the billowing smoke after the attack, and is trying to get what he needs to make sure his family survives, given that all of their trade was to Avaj’Riss. He says they’re hoping that the traders from Drakk to Colareton are willing to sell his goods, but he’s worried that route might shut down based on what he heard from the Drakk-kin traders.

There’s a trail of blood from one of the butchered corpses leading out of the city, into the woods in the north. Finger bones and ribs litter the road. There’s a pathway (not road) leading toward the western woods, and there are remains tightly wrapped and hung in the trees, as though curing the meat.

The party will begin encountering bear traps as they get into the woods, and after setting off or disarming the first one, they’ll hear a noise of something following them on two legs, and then dropping to four legs and running off. Tracking the sound / smell leads to a cottage in the woods, surrounded by traps.
